Eczema has been a part of my life for as long as I can remember. As a child, flare-ups on my arms, hands, and even my face were frequent, uncomfortable, and frustrating. Now, as a woman who loves skincare routines, finding products that soothe rather than irritate my skin has become a personal mission. For anyone who also lives with eczema, you’ll know how challenging it is to find that perfect balance between nourishing your skin and avoiding triggers that escalate flare-ups.
Through my search, I’ve consulted several experts and even connected with people who have lived experiences similar to mine. One universal lesson I’ve learned is that eczema flare-ups rarely have a single cause. Blood sugar imbalances, food sensitivities, stress, harsh skincare, and environmental factors like pollution or weather changes all play a role. The face is especially sensitive—thin, exposed, and easily overwhelmed by too many products.
A crucial part of managing eczema is simplicity and gentleness. Dermatologist Dr Suretha Kannenberg emphasises that the skin barrier is key: when it’s damaged, moisture escapes and irritants enter, triggering inflammation. “Never underestimate the importance of gentle skincare and the application of copious amounts of the correct moisturisers, especially in the management of milder cases of atopic eczema,” she advises. My go-to daily routine now is deliberately minimal: gentle cleansing, followed by a rich moisturiser or serum, and targeted balm on flare areas.

I’ve learned that Vaseline truly deserves a shout-out. For decades, this simple occlusive has been my first line of defence against dry patches and flare-ups—it locks in moisture and shields the skin while I sleep. Similarly, NIVEA has always left my skin feeling soft and nourished. I especially enjoy their new ranges and serums, which provide moisture without irritation, giving me confidence that my skin is protected and healthy.
From my discussions with experts like Nicole Sherwin of EcoDiva.co.za, ingredients such as shea butter, marula oil, aloe vera, and hemp seed oil are game-changers. “Within Eco Diva Natural, the products that consistently shine for facial eczema are: Natural Face Wash – ultra-gentle, non-stripping, pH-balanced cleansing; Superfood Face Serum – omega-rich, barrier-repairing, anti-inflammatory; Ultimate Face Cream – deeply nourishing, protective and calming; Rejuvenate Canna Balm – for spot-treating severe dryness, cracks or flare patches,” she explains. These products don’t “treat aggressively” but nurture the skin back to balance.
Lifestyle is equally important. Cassidy Da Silva Franks, who has managed eczema since school, shared: “I’ve struggled with eczema since junior school, and after I had my son (4 years ago) it became significantly worse. Since then, stress has been a major trigger for me — when I’m highly stressed, I tend to experience full flare-ups. Products that have worked for me include Epizone E as a body wash, prescribed medication such as prednisone, antibiotics, and steroid creams when needed. For daily maintenance, my go-to products are Bepanthen for both my face and body, as well as Lelive Jelly Splash, their Vitamin C serum, and the lightweight moisturiser, which I’ve found gentle enough for my skin. I also sometimes use aqueous cream on my body, as well as the Lelive oil la la glow body oil (love this product). I’ve learned that lifestyle management is just as important — staying out of the sun as much as possible and wearing 100% cotton or linen clothing makes a noticeable difference.”
Awareness is also critical. Dr Alicia McMaster, Head of Medical for Speciality Care at Sanofi, explains: “Atopic eczema is incredibly difficult on patients and their families, seriously impacting their daily lives and ultimately affecting quality of life. An individual’s overall health and well-being can be severely impaired by the disease. Patients and families are at the core of this year’s World Atopic Eczema Day. Working together with the Allergy Foundation South Africa, on September 14th, we will come together and unite for action and recognition of the importance of this disease. Together, we #CareForAtopicEczema. It connects everyone who shares the consequences of the illness and encourages them to talk about their experiences.”

As I continue my journey, my goal is to discover the top five eczema-friendly facial products that combine efficacy, gentleness, and nourishment. I hope this article provides reassurance and practical insights to anyone navigating the unpredictable world of eczema. Remember: eczema is not a punishment—it’s communication. Your skin is asking for gentler inputs, deeper nourishment, and more kindness.
Whether you’re seeking your first soothing balm or a new favourite serum, may this guide inspire you to embrace routines that care for your skin—and yourself—with patience and love.
