Why Sunscreen Matters for Sensitive Skin – Even in Winter

If you’ve been following our sensitive skin series at Women Diaries ZA, you’ll know that living with eczema and reactive skin means every product matters. Fragrances, harsh ingredients and even certain sunscreens can trigger irritation, redness and flare-ups, leaving many people with sensitive skin wondering whether sun protection is worth the risk.

The answer is a resounding yes, but choosing the right sunscreen is essential.

According to Mary-Ann, Managing Director of Velden Botanicals, sunscreen is about far more than preventing sunburn.

“Sunscreen is more than sun protection – it’s cellular protection. Good clinically tested formulations shield against UVA and UVB rays, which are not only present from the sun but also from computer screens and indoor lighting. Wearing sunscreen daily, regardless of the season, helps prevent oxidative stress, DNA damage, collagen degradation and inflammation. It is an absolutely essential daily ritual for skin longevity and preventing premature ageing.”

Many people mistakenly believe sunscreen is only necessary during summer. In reality, UV rays remain active throughout winter, and prolonged exposure can still contribute to pigmentation, inflammation and accelerated ageing, particularly for those already dealing with eczema or a compromised skin barrier.

Mary-Ann explains that winter places additional stress on the skin.

“Winter is one of the most revealing seasons for the skin. Declines in humidity and temperature unmask skin dehydration, barrier impairment and sensitivity. It’s the time of year to cocoon and protect. The most important winter routine is a two-step barrier protection programme using ingredients like hyaluronic acid, glycerin or African Myrothamnus to deeply hydrate first, followed by nourishing oils such as marula and rosehip to lock in moisture and prevent transepidermal water loss.”

When selecting a sunscreen, look for fragrance-free formulations that have been tested on sensitive skin and contain moisturising ingredients that support the skin barrier rather than strip it.

One South African skincare brand, Luminous Era, has intentionally developed its SPF with melanin-rich and sensitive skin in mind.

“Our SPF 30 face lotion is vegan and fragrance-free, designed to provide broad-spectrum protection while remaining lightweight, fast absorbing and leaving no white cast. It has been tested on dry, oily, combination and sensitive skin, including mildly eczema-prone skin, so that people with melanin-rich skin can protect themselves every day without compromising comfort or their natural complexion,” the brand explains.

The takeaway is simple: healthy skin starts with protection. Whether you live with eczema, struggle with sensitivity or simply want to maintain a strong skin barrier, daily sunscreen should be as non-negotiable as cleansing and moisturising. Your future skin will thank you for it.
